Five cheap tablets

Five 7-inch tablets for under £200

Just when you think you have decided what 7-inch tablet you are going to spend your hard-earned cash on, another tablet hits the market.

The Tesco Hudl has just been announced, set to hit the shops at the end of the month. But while it has a low price tag attached to it, it isn't the only 7-inch tablet for under £200.

Here are five devices that will give you what you need to play your games and surf the web for no more than £200.

Barnes & Noble Nook HD - From £79

The Barnes & Noble Nook HD is cheap and cheerful, gives you a good battery life and you get a choice of grey or white.

The Nook HD features a customised version of Android 4 as its operating system and runs on a 1.3GHz dual core OMAP 4470 processor. The 7-inch LCD touchscreen display has a resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels.

Available in two storage options including 8GB (£79) and 16GB (£99), the Barnes & Noble Nook HD also has a microSD for storage expansion.

The battery will give you 10.5 hours of continuous reading, or 9.5 hours of video playback and the device measures 11mm thick, weighs 315g and comes in Snow (white) and Smoke (grey).

Tesco Hudl - £119

The Tesco Hudl is good value and while Tesco services such as BlinkBox are built in, you're not forced to use them, as you are with Amazon.

Available from 30 September, the Hudl sports Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and comes with a 1.5GHz quad-core processor. Its 7-inch display has a resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels and it promises 9 hours of battery life.

You won't get any 3G or 4G connectivity, but you will get Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and a Micro HDMI port for video output.

In terms of storage, the Hudl will come with 16GB along with a microSD for further expansion up to 32GB.

Amazon Kindle Fire HD – From £159

The Amazon Kindle Fire HD is a little more expensive, but the user interface is nicely integrated with content. It has a good build quality and sound, plus you get cloud storage options.

The Kindle Fire HD runs on a customised Android-based platform, integrating the company’s own products and services such as Whispersync and access to apps, music, books, magazines and movies from its ecosystem.

The device runs on a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and the 7-inch touchscreen display will give you an IPS 1280 x 800 pixel resolution, featuring a polarising filter to reduce glare.

The Kindle Fire HD comes with stereo speakers busting out Dolby Digital Plus sound, along with a front-facing camera.

Storage-wise, you have a choice of 16GB (£159) or 32GB (£199) internal storage and you'll get 11 hours of battery life, according to the company. It measures 10.3mm thick and weighs 396g.

Google Nexus 7 - From £199

Google's Nexus 7 has the sharpest 7-inch display on the market, alongside a powerful processor. The built-in wireless charging could come in handy and it is lightweight at under 300g.

The new Nexus 7 is made by ASUS and comes with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor. It packs a 1920 x 1200 resolution into its 7-inch display, making it the sharpest 7-inch display on the market.

Alongside a front and rear-facing camera, you'll get built-in wireless charging, 2GB RAM, and a choice of 16GB (£199), 32GB (£239) internal storage.

The battery plans to give you 9 hours of HD video playback or 10 hours of web browsing, and the Nexus 7 comes with dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC connectivity. It measures 8.65mm thick and weighs 290g.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7 - £199

Samsung's Galaxy Tab 3 is a little more expensive than other 7-inch tablets out there, but it's quite light and slim, plus the addition of a microSD slot is a good bonus.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and has a 1.2GHz dual-core processor under its hood. The 7-inch TFT display features a 1024 x 600 resolution.

You'll get a 3-megapixel rear camera and a 1.2-megapixel front camera, along with Wi-Fi direct, Bluetooth 3.0 and USB 2.0 connectivity.

There are two versions of the Galaxy Tab 3 7, a 8GB model and a 16GB model, both with a microSD slot for further expansion. It measures 9.9mm thick and hits the scales at 320g.

Whether you are looking for the cheapest 7-inch model out there, or the sharpest display on the market, one of these tablets will fulfill your desires.
